Out on the open road, there are many necessities. If you are a new truck driver, you will discover many things you need as you travel and often because you don’t have them when you need them most. Every driver is different and will want different things, but there are some good basics that every driver should have at all times. Experience has taught us that in the world of truck driving, there is one thing you can count on: the unexpected.
That could be everything and anything from weather and traffic to major catastrophes or simple shipping and receiving delays. The key to being a happy and successful truck driver is being prepared. Here is a list of a few things you need as you travel, and don’t forget, every driver is different, so make some of it your own.
Entertainment Items
Delays are often a part of a truck driver’s life. It doesn’t matter if it is music, books, movies, or games, but keeping enough items on board to keep you entertained for hours can help make surviving those unexpected and long delays more bearable.
Extra Everything
If there is one thing a truck driver can’t have enough of, it is extra everything. Bring extra socks, a change of clothes, shoes, gloves or weather gear, and even snacks, because you just never know.
First Aid Kit
This one goes without saying and it doesn’t matter what your vocation is, because the golden rule is always safety first. Additionally, you never know how far from nowhere you might be when you are on the road and need help.
Emergency Kit
Keep your basic tools (e.g., tire gauge, pliers, jumper cables, etc.), safety vest, flares, extra batteries, flashlight, and other emergency items in a kit for those just-in-case situations. Remember, expect the unexpected and prepare for everything.
